Fire protection and evacuation assistants are employees who take specific measures to avert or minimize danger for other employees in the event of a fire and thus represent an important component of company fire prevention. According to §10 ArbSchG, every employer must have an appropriate number of employees trained as fire protection and evacuation assistants in relation to the total number of employees. When determining an appropriate number, shift operation and absences of individual employees must also be taken into account. The employer should act according to the principle of "better too many than too few", because the more employees are trained, the higher the probability that no one will be harmed in the event of a fire.

As fire protection assistant you have the following tasks and duties:

• Identification of fire protection deficiencies and fire risks

• Eliminating/ informing superiors about defects and fire risks

• Participation in fire safety inspections

• Supporting the employer (avoiding fire hazards, keeping escape routes clear)

• Ensuring that employees can leave the premises independently in the event of a fire

• Extinguishing incipient fires without endangering yourself
